How to make sure your new brochure is effective

Printed brochures are an effective way to showcase what your business has to offer. They give you the chance to introduce your brand with colours and textures, and provide far more space for photos and text than an email could ever manage.

We’ve put together our top tips to ensure your brochure does justice to your brand.

Decide on your purpose

Before you begin, it’s important to have a clear idea of what this brochure is for. Why will someone pick it up? What will they get from reading it? If you’re hoping to inform readers about an experience, encourage someone to make a purchase, or present a broad range of information in an easy-to-understand way, keep this intention in mind as you prepare the brochure artwork.

It sounds simple, but in the excitement of writing copy, adding photos and design touches, it’s easy to lose sight of the end goal of your brochure, which can end up diluting your message.

Plan your pages

In a process known as ‘pagination’, plan the layout of your brochure carefully. Ensure the number of pages (including the front and back covers) is divisible by 4. Think about the order in which the photos and copy will appear, and try to include a mix of single pages and double-page spreads to create variety and interest. The total number of pages will influence whether your brochure will be stapled or perfect bound, so keep this in mind too.

Make your content enjoyable

Long pages of text can look intimidating and dull to a reader, so make sure you break up your information with a selection of relevant, appealing images – your own photography, stock library images, and appropriate graphics.

Understand that people will ‘skim’ your brochure, and make it easy for them to find information this way, highlighting the most important information, prices, or instructions with larger fonts or different colours.

Select your paper

Prospective clients are more likely to hold onto your brochure if it looks and feels good, and your paper choice should never be an afterthought. The feel of your brochure should reflect your brand identity. Looking for a touch of luxury? There are modern matte laminates and soft-touch options, or choose a sleek gloss finish to add a polished feel to your print.

If you’re an earnest, sustainable business, choose an uncoated stock that will feel warm and natural. We offer a range of FSC approved, carbon balanced and carbon offset options, and we can help you with adding the appropriate logos to your print run, to demonstrate your commitment to the environment.
